Mindless copying is actually killing your design skills
Break free from the pack, learn from the market, and embrace creativity to innovate like never before
Welcome to Learn Primitives!
Here's what you'll learn:
Understanding the WHY, WHO, and BELIEFS
Building designs with CONTEXT
Staying curious
and much more…
Let’s dive in…
Attention all designers! It's time to stop the mindless copying and start thinking creatively.
Are you tired of creating designs that fall flat and fail to leave a lasting impact?
Are you constantly copying from courses and social media, without truly understanding why a design works?
It's time to break free from the pack and start thinking creatively. The best designers break every rule that's "right" in design. So, why are you still blindly copying from courses and Twitter?
If you want to become a top-notch designer, you need to understand WHY something works, WHO you are targeting, and the BELIEFS you have to break to make an impact. Only then can you build your design solutions with CONTEXT and avoid the tactic-filled BS that so many designers rely on.
Following just a handful of fellow designers leaves you closed-minded, and being closed-minded as a designer is like shooting yourself in the foot. It's time to remove preconceived opinions and become a student of the market. Observe what gets attention, and what people are buying, and ask yourself why.
It's time to start learning lessons from everyone, not just a small niche of designers. The "braindead celebrities" and silly TikTok trends have valuable lessons to teach, too. Be constantly in a state of open-mindedness and always ask WHY WHY WHY.
To create designs that truly leave a lasting impact, you need to start thinking differently, and that means stepping out of your comfort zone and embracing curiosity and creativity.
One of the most significant steps you can take is to understand your target audience deeply. Gone are the days of designing for the masses; today's designers need to create custom-tailored solutions that resonate with different audiences. So, always keep your target audience in mind and design for them with a context that matters.
It's not just about reputation; tangible results are what matter most. Great design must deliver results, including increased revenue, improved brand recognition, and enhanced customer engagement.
To stay ahead of the curve, open your mind to unexpected sources of inspiration. Inspiration can come from anywhere, and you should always be curious to learn from different industries, pop culture, current events, and emerging technologies.
Make it a habit to ask "Why?". By understanding the real reasons behind the design choices you make, you'll create solutions that are more impactful and resonate with your audience.
So don't be just another designer following in the footsteps of others. Be bold, take risks, and create designs that challenge the status quo. Use these actionable takeaways to help you break free from the pack and make a lasting impact in the design world.
So designer friends, take it from us and always be asking WHY, WHY, WHY, WHY, and WHY like an annoying 4-year-old in all things design. Only then will you break free from the pack and make a lasting impact in the design world.
Until next time,
Pascal & Mitchell
